Perito Moreno emerges in the middle of a steppe, and is the first town of the province of Santa Cruz that you will encounter when traveling south along National Road No. 40.

This area was seriously damaged by the ashes ejected from the Hudson Volcano in 1991, causing big loses in the agricultural and stockbreeding sector, especially sheep. In November, the National Festival of Sheep Shearing is held in this town, which shows how important this kind of livestock is for both the town and the region.

Perito Moreno caters for good hotels, municipal cabins and campsites. Among other attractions of the area, the Cueva de las Manos (Cave of the Hands) stands out with intriguing rock paintings of hands on the walls inside the cave.
